Like so many, I had become a sceptic and disgusted with the process of merchandising as well as with the manipulation of the legislative process in Congress, but at last there now is a law that establishes the principle of universal health care even if it does not yet achieve it in fact.
Unfortunately, this weekend was an ugly moment in US history as the venom of extremist right wingers was at work on the steps of the Capitol when thoroughly mislead "Tea-party" types behaved like illiterate, intolerant and intemperate hysterics. And these were not a few among mostly "'honest and upright, patriotic Americans,' driven to extremes by a bill the American people do not want," as one Republican Representative described them. What happened there was the fruit of incessant harassing by the likes of Glen Beck of a black President and the program that a majority had voted for. None of the Republican Members who were there with their placards made any attempt to stop them. Subsequently they even argued that the Dems had provoked the outrage as Nancy Pelosi walked arm in arm with John Lewis. And then they argue that there is no racism in this anti- aggression.
And then there was John McCain who announced in an interview "There will be no more cooperation this year." What cooperation? It's hard to believe that this handsome young man with whom I shared beers and cooked hamburgers a few times turned out such an embittered looser who seems totally oblivious to the fact that he is in the process of self-destruction. A son and grandson of admirals he could not surpass them as a result of his tragic imprisonment and not having become Commander in Chief, he's willing to become remembered as a failure, where at least he could have salvaged his reputation as a heroic prisoner of war. During the campaign he prided himself as the one with experience in "reaching across the aisle." But that was went he believed he would reach out to minority Democrats as the Republican President. Though at the end of the week he called for "civic discourse," which is nice, but doesn't civic discourse include being truthful?
